A weed by any other name

What is a weed? An unwanted plant, a misunderstood plant? The definition of a weed is an age-old joke amongst gardeners. Within the native plant lovers' world, many plants that are considered undesirable weeds are embraced and welcomed. Goldenrod is a great example. Native plant enthusiasts have long realized the benefits of Goldenrod as a late season food source for pollinators, and winter food source for songbirds. Another native species that still needs some good press in Poison Ivy. Yes, I said Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy is a native plant, and the berries are a great food source for numerous bird species. I have a large patch of Poision Ivy in the edge of my woods. Knowing of its benefits for wildlife, I let it grow. An added bonus of Poison Ivy is its beautiful fall foliage. So, before you break out the flame thrower, consider leaving the weeds, the Goldenrod, the Poison Ivy. They have underrated benefits. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?
